Yegor Gaidar is best known for having served as the chairman of the government and the economics and finance minister in the early 1990s, where he oversaw privatization efforts and the transition to a market economy following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. He has since jaunted back and forth between politics and academia; he is currently serving as the director for the Institute for the Economy in Transition, which he founded, but was as recently as 2004 a Duma deputy. He was the executive director of the Union of Right Forces, a political party, and still serves as a vice president of the International Democratic Union.
